52 and unsure whats next in life. Can you relate? First, the good news. Im a good-looking, athletic, youthful white male whos fun, humorous, well-educated, well-mannered, confident, intelligent, a good listener communicator, passionate, loving, caring, respectful, open and down-to-earth. I have an amazing job at one of these storied local tech companies that have been likened to a land for adults. At this company Im surrounded by , well-dressed, beautiful people its like witnessing a beauty pageant or fashion show daily. While I appreciate the sights, Im way out of my league and a whole generation older so I feel out of place a lot of the time.
But there is a darker side. While I do have lots of acquaintances I have no real friends. Most of my so-ed friends were from my married days before the divorce they all dropped us since we no longer fit in with the community. And its tough as an older, solo man to make new friends. My divorce also left me without the house and the means to get back into the overheated market.
Im not sure where to turn at times and sometimes I feel some self-destructive urges. I find myself taking an Ambien nightly to try to salvage a few hours of uninterrupted sleep. I drink a little more than I probably should, maybe a couple drinks or sometimes I open a nice bottle of wine and find myself finishing it.
So, where am I going with my life at my age? I really dont know. The optimism I felt earlier has dissipated. Im starting to feel empty inside. Just soldiering on knowing that I have a lot more yesterdays than tomorrows in my life.
I know I should get out and meet people so I often find myself having a drink at a quirky or cool bar where I get to be around people but rarely connect beyond some superficial pleasantries or sports metaphors. Ideally Id be successful in making friends but I dont belong to any men groups, I dont golf or collect cars or go fishing or do the other "typical" male activities and Im too old to fall into the "bro" groups. And anyway its so hard to discuss any of this life stuff with the guys.
My peer group all seems to be fixated on their cars, their remodeling jobs, their vacation homes, and so on. My life has never been focused on possessions but on experiences. In fact, I basiy dont own anything at all except for my clothes. With most people in the constant hunt for material goods and the finer things, that kind of makes me an outlier.
For me I feel that my overwhelming need now is being with a loving, supporting, open-minded, physical, passionate, down to earth, woman with strong desires to match mine. Quite often I really crave physical intimacy, wanting to experience our bodies connected for as long as we can go and have that truly transcendent feeling. Yes, I know, this doesnt solve any problems or lead to long-term solutions, but Im fine with that sometimes. I want that exhilarating, visceral feeling of being alive. After all, some of the most exhilarating pleasures in life are temporary and ephemeral.
While you may be a well-meaning woman, I have to point out that Im not looking for a pep talk or some feel-good advice. I want someone whos not hiding behind talk of "recovery programs but whos in touch with her true feelings and honest about feeling a little disoriented and vulnerable on the inside because we all are.
